In addition to a research article, this handwriting exercise was my travel journal from a trip to Malaysia in May 2017. This question defined both the subject of my research- aging in developing economies- and myself as the object of the question. It is a question often inherent to the formalities of introductory dialogue in language learning and was frequently asked of me during this trip. Answering this question consequently meant responding to the follow-up inquiries about the absence of marriage or children in my life. It’s a question that leaves me to reckon with time, choice, and cultural assumptions in the US and abroad.
